NFV Essentials Week in Review: Ciena, RADCOM, VanillaSoft, VeloCloud

December 03, 2016

This week’s NFV Essentials coverage included stories on network functions virtualization as it relates to the DevOps model, adoption in the Asia-Pacific region, RADCOM’s involvement in the Open Source MANO effort, and the MEF’s recognition of VeloCloud.

Contributing writer Frank Griffin this week reported about a recent VanillaPlus piece that talks about how NFV will only reach its full potential if service providers embrace a DevOps mindset.

Griffin this week also wrote about how service assurance and customer experience management solutions provider RADCOM has joined the Open Source Management and Orchestration (or MANO) community. That community also includes such leading CSPs as Bell Mobility, BT, PT Portugal, SK Telecom, Sprint, Telefonica, and Telenor. As for RADCOM, it caters to communications service providers as they move to network functions virtualization.

"Providing an open source MANO will accelerate this transformation as it creates an open, standards-based orchestration environment that covers both resource and service orchestration to allow automated deployment and interconnection of all components, both for NFV network scenarios and the management of network service lifecycles; delivering network automation, service agility and significant opex and capex savings," said Tomer Ilan, RADCOM's senior director of product management.

Contributing writer Michael Guta, meanwhile, reported about adoption rates of NFV and software-defined networking in the APAC part of the world. According to a Ciena and IDC survey, he wrote, 30 percent of Asian enterprises already have implemented SDN, and 64 percent of enterprises in the region are deploying virtualized network functions.

"Asia as a whole is making rapid strides in the adoption and advancement of NFV and SDN. Enterprises have seen the value in agile, programmable, and highly scalable network infrastructures that are enabled by NFV and SDN," said Shiv Putcha, associate director of service provider and connected consumer research at IDC Asia-Pacific.

And I stayed business this week covering the SD-WAN space. That included a piece I put together about MEF presenting the SDN Technology of the Year award to VeloCloud.
